Yatake Highlands A summer break in the highlands, mug in hand

A summer day of camping at Yatake Highlands Belton Auto Campground. I thought I’d take a short break with my mug, but the more I watched the mountains and listened to the trees swaying, the more I realized that spending time here had become what I looked forward to most.

A day of camping in the summer highlands, with the mountains in view. I paused with my mug in both hands and was surprised by how reluctant I was to leave.

A woman wearing a white short-sleeved blouse looks out at the mountains at Yatake Highlands Belton Auto Campground in summer. In the right foreground, she is shown from the waist up, holding a metal mug by its handle in one hand and supporting its base with the other. Beyond her are grass and trees, with overlapping mountain ridges stretching from the left to the center.

SummerSummer, sunny day

I held my mug in both hands and watched the mountains and trees

I stopped for a day of camping at Yatake Highlands in summer. Belton Auto Campground is a place where you can slow down among the highland scenery. I’d meant to rest a little before setting off on the next road, but the moment I got out of the car, the sound of the trees swaying caught my attention and I found myself looking up.

Beyond the trees, one mountain ridge rose behind another. I held the mug by its handle in one hand, resting the other beneath it, and felt my shoulders relax. I took a sip, then looked out at the mountains again. I’d thought I’d make this a quick stop, but I was already falling for the place.

I held the mug just below my chest and listened to the trees. The sound faded for a moment, then the breeze came through again, and I found myself listening for it. Maybe I didn’t need to hurry on. When I think back on this trip, I have a feeling I’ll love remembering the time I spent here without rushing anywhere.

Then I thought about how I’d planned the trip and laughed a little. I’d thought so carefully about which roads to take, but I’d decided how long to rest in no time at all. Maybe it’s because I love driving that I notice things once I’m out of the car. Next time, I want to plan my trip around a day at the campground.

Before I left, I looked toward the trees one more time. The branches were swaying just as they had before, but now they felt much closer than when I’d arrived. A photo alone might not show how relaxed I was here. I’ll tell my friend how I waited for the breeze even while telling myself it was time to move on.

Even after I got back to the car, I kept thinking about the sound of the trees. I was still excited for the road ahead, but today, even this little rest became the highlight of the trip. Once I had my hands back on the wheel and my eyes on the road, I wanted to drive again. I set off, carrying the time I’d spent in the summer highlands with me.

Local specialties

Miyazaki Tamatama (manju)

This sweet is made with Tamatama kumquats grown in Ebino: the filling is mixed with kumquat paste, then wrapped in dough and baked. It’s listed as a certified specialty of Ebino City. I’d love to bring some home to enjoy while remembering this trip to the highlands.

Highlights

A pause at around 700 m

Yatake Highlands Belton Auto Campground sits in Yatake Highlands at around 700 m above sea level. It’s a Western-style campground surrounded by expansive natural scenery. As I held my mug in both hands and looked out at the mountains, I found myself wanting to linger a little longer instead of talking about the drive that had brought me here.

A day of camping in summer

The city describes it as a place where you can enjoy camping for the day and outdoor activities, as well as overnight stays. It’s a lovely stop on a drive when you want to slow down in the summer highlands. I’d planned to rest only briefly, but I was glad I gave myself more time here.

Once there, stop by Central House to register before your day of camping. Open the campground on the map below and work in some time to enjoy the summer highlands. I found myself wanting to talk about the time I spent there even after I got home.

For a summer day of camping in Yatake Highlands, head to Belton Auto Campground. I’d like to leave time to unwind in the highlands and pick out a local specialty from Ebino, too.
