Along the coast of Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture

Explore Shinkirō Road The spring horizon and firefly squid

On a mid-April morning, I’d love to drive along Shinkirō Road in Uozu. I can park near Umi-no-Eki Shinkirō and take a walk while looking out across Toyama Bay. I’d bring firefly squid with a miso-vinegar sauce and enjoy a springtime break by the sea.

On a sunny mid-April morning, I took a break along the Uozu coast. Let’s bring along some firefly squid and enjoy a taste of spring while looking out over Toyama Bay.

A woman wearing a mint windbreaker, cream mid-layer and dark trousers lifts a boiled firefly squid from a small bowl with chopsticks at a seaside plaza in Uozu. To the right are a low seawall and wave-dissipating blocks, with the horizon over Toyama Bay beyond them. A curved metal drainage channel runs across the ground near her feet.

A taste of spring by the sea

On a sunny mid-April morning, I followed the coast to Umi-no-Eki Shinkirō. I parked and stepped out into the plaza; Toyama Bay stretched out right in front of me. I unzipped my mint windbreaker and walked toward the water.

The sea stretched all the way to the horizon beyond the low seawall. I let my eyes follow the line where it met the sky, slowing my pace a little. I like being able to get out of the car and spend a while listening to the waves.

Today, I brought along some firefly squid dressed in miso-vinegar sauce, which I’d prepared before setting out. I lifted one from the little bowl with my chopsticks; it looked so plump. It was one of the dishes I’d been looking forward to trying on a spring trip to Toyama.

I coated one in the miso-vinegar sauce and took a bite. The sauce’s tang came first, followed by the firefly squid’s rich umami. I reached for another before I knew it. I’d come for the sea, but for a while I couldn’t take my eyes off the bowl. I’m glad I’d brought along something delicious to enjoy, too.

I set my chopsticks down for a moment and looked toward the horizon. This is where mirages appear, making distant scenery seem to stretch or turn upside down. Thinking of the name “Shinkirō Road” makes me want to keep gazing out to sea.

After packing away the little bowl, I decided to take another short walk around the plaza. I’d enjoyed a little taste of spring, and now I could take in the sound of the waves. I’d like to make room on a drive along the Uozu coast for little stops like this, where I can get out and walk.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Local specialties to try

Firefly squid with miso-vinegar sauce

Firefly squid fishing starts in Toyama in March. Boiled firefly squid dressed with miso-vinegar sauce is a springtime favorite in Toyama homes. I’d prepare some before setting out and enjoy it by the sea. Bite into one and its umami really comes through.

Highlights

A drive along Toyama Bay

This coastal road runs for about 8 km from Kyōden Fishing Port to Mirage Land. After driving along the coast, I’d like to get out and take a walk to the sound of the waves, too.

Watch for mirages by the sea

The coast around Uozu Port is known as a place to watch for mirages. People come to watch for them from late March to around June. I’d love to take in the wide bay beside Umi-no-Eki Shinkirō.

I’d like to include a short walk near Umi-no-Eki Shinkirō on my coastal drive. After taking in the sea and a taste of spring, I’ll set off for the next stop.
