Mt. Sangane lookout, near Nishio and Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture

Sangane Skyline and Mikawa Bay Skyline Hydrangeas nearby, island silhouettes across the bay

I took a sip of the chilled Nishio matcha I'd brought along, then held the cup against my chest. Beyond the hydrangeas, I could see the town; beyond that, the island silhouettes in the bay. I want to take my time, letting my eyes travel from the flowers close by to the islands far out at sea.

Read this early-summer scene among the hydrangeas, looking out over Mikawa Bay from Mt. Sangane.

At the Mt. Sangane lookout in early summer, a woman in a lilac short-sleeved blouse and white skirt holds a clear cup of chilled Nishio matcha in both hands, eyes closed. Hydrangeas, a mountain ridge, a town and the islands of Mikawa Bay are visible.

SummerA bright afternoon in mid-June

From nearby hydrangeas to distant islands

At the lookout, hydrangeas were right at my feet, with the town and sea beyond them. I took a sip of the chilled Nishio matcha I'd brought along and held the cup in both hands against my chest. When I closed my eyes, I noticed the tea's aftertaste. Maybe I'll pause here for a moment before I finish my drink.

I opened my eyes and looked at the hydrangeas beside me. After taking in one cluster, I looked beyond it and saw the mountain ridge continuing down the slope. I'd been looking at flowers close by, but then I wanted to follow the ridge and see how far the mountain stretched. Cup still in hand, I compared the blossoms with the view in the distance.

The town sits between the mountains, with Mikawa Bay beyond it. As I searched the bay for island shapes, I found myself wanting to work out where the mountains ended and the sea began. I could linger over the view because I'd stepped out of the car and stopped here. I'd wanted a moment like this along the way.

The route over Mt. Sangane is also known as the Hydrangea Line. Hydrangeas bloom along the route from June through early July, so I wanted to head up the mountain at this time of year. If I'd come only for the distant bay, I might have missed the flowers nearby. When I turned my attention back to the blooms, I was glad I'd come when they were out.

The Nishio matcha I had with me was prepared before I came up the mountain. Nishio is a matcha-producing area, and in town you can enjoy the tea or try matcha sweets. I wanted to pair tea with a scenic break, too. Next time I'm in Nishio, I'd like to linger over a cup in a tea room.

I finished the last sip in my cup and turned back towards the bay. I love seeing the hydrangeas close by and the islands far away all at once. If you drive up Mt. Sangane in early summer, get out of the car and take in this view. I want to remember both moments: taking in the flowers and looking out to sea.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Food to try on this trip

Nishio Matcha

Nishio's local specialty is matcha. I brought it chilled for a break in the mountains. I'd also love to stop in town and enjoy a cup at a tea room or café.

What to see here

From the flowers to the bay

Just beyond the hydrangeas are the mountains and town, then the sea and its islands. I loved letting my eyes move between the near and distant views.

Bring Nishio tea along for the drive

Nishio is a matcha-producing area. After taking in the mountain view, you could stop in town for a cup of tea or matcha sweets.

Two scenic routes

Sangane Skyline

Route lengths
5.1km
Mountain elevations along the routes
326m (Mt. Sangane)

A scenic drive from the Nishio side to Katahara Onsen. In hydrangea season, I'd love to stop along the way and look out over Mikawa Bay.

Mikawa Bay Skyline (Prefectural Route 525)

Route lengths
17.6km
Mountain elevations along the routes
436m (Mt. Tōbōmine) · 454m (Mt. Goi)

A scenic route from Fukozu, Kota Town, to Kunisaka Pass. It's fun to choose a route that follows the mountain ridges, too.

The elevations listed here are for mountains along the routes. This time, I'm sharing a stop on Mt. Sangane. Next time, choose which road you'd like to drive.
