Saroma Town, Mount Horoiwa

Lake Saroma Lookout That narrow sandbar in the distance separates the lake and sea

At Lake Saroma Lookout, a great lake spreads beyond the forest. On a clear summer morning, looking as far as the narrow sandbar in the distance helps you understand where the lake lies in relation to the Sea of Okhotsk.

On a summer morning, I’d like to enjoy the green forest and the wide lake from the lookout.

At Lake Saroma Lookout in summer, a woman in a pale blue jacket and pink skirt rests both hands on the wooden railing and looks at the lake and distant sandbar

SummerA morning in July or August

A summer morning looking at the lake from the railing

I arrived at the lookout on Mount Horoiwa on a clear summer morning. When I opened the front of my pale blue jacket, the breeze reached my white top. I rested both hands on the wooden railing and looked at the lake beyond the forest.

Water spread to both left and right, and at first I couldn’t tell how far the lake went. Following the shoreline from the right, I began to see a narrow strip of land in the distance. So this was its shape. I couldn’t help looking again.

Apparently that narrow sandbar separates the lake from the Sea of Okhotsk. The water before me, and the sea farther beyond. I could match what I remembered from the map to the landscape in front of me, which made the view even more enjoyable.

The forest leaves moved in front of me, while the distant lake looked still. Feeling the wood of the railing under my hands, I enjoyed the contrast. It was lovely to come somewhere high during the hot season and feel the breeze like this.

I wanted to fit a broad sweep of the lake into a photo, so I raised the camera. But before taking another, I lowered my hands and looked as far as the bend in the shore. Next time, I’d like to get a sense of the lake’s size from the shore too.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Local specialty

Lake Saroma scallops

Saroma’s speciality scallops have a delicate sweetness and a pleasing texture. I’d like to taste them grilled in their shells or as sashimi during a meal after looking at the lake.

Highlights

The narrow sandbar separating lake and sea

A sandbar of about 20 km separates the lake from the Sea of Okhotsk. I could see how the lake and sea in front of me matched what I remembered from the map, and I wanted to follow the shoreline with my eyes again.

A view opening above the forest

From Mount Horoiwa at 376 m above sea level, you can enjoy both the nearby forest and the distant lake.
