Kagamiyama Observatory An afternoon nibbling Matsubara okoshi with a view over the pines

The pine forest stretches out just before the sea. At Kagamiyama Observatory in spring, I took in Karatsu Bay while nibbling Matsubara okoshi I’d brought along. The name of the sweet suddenly made sense beside the view in front of me.

Read about the spring views I found at Kagamiyama Observatory and the afternoon I spent there.

A spring view from Kagamiyama over Karatsu City, the Niji no Matsubara pine grove, and Karatsu Bay. A woman in a pink cardigan and navy skirt holds a piece of Matsubara okoshi near her mouth.

SpringA spring afternoon

An afternoon nibbling Matsubara okoshi with a view over the pines

The trees seemed to shift as the road curved toward the summit. After driving the 4km road up the mountain, I got out and headed for the observatory. The moment I saw the sea, my friend and I simply fell quiet.

Fields and the town lay in the foreground, with the Niji no Matsubara pine grove beyond them and Karatsu Bay farther out. As my eyes moved toward the sea, even the whole town we’d just driven through was part of the panorama. From up here, I could see how wide it all was, something I hadn’t noticed from below.

I took Matsubara okoshi from its paper wrapper and brought it to my lips. One crisp bite, and the sweetness of brown sugar mingled with the scent of ginger. With the spring breeze brushing my light-pink cardigan, I wanted to nibble it slowly.

The surface of Matsubara okoshi is said to be modeled on the Japanese black pines of Niji no Matsubara. I told my friend, then took another look at the pine grove in front of the sea. When I chose it, I was looking forward to the taste; now I wanted to take home the story behind its name too.

Kagamiyama’s elevation is 284m. At the summit there’s a grassy clearing and a rest area, and in spring you can enjoy its cherry blossoms and azaleas. I decided to take my time looking across the bay first, then go for a short walk around the summit.

If we pass those pines on the drive back, I’ll remember how they looked from above. Seeing the landscape from the mountain, then heading back into it, makes the coastal road ahead even more inviting.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Local specialty

Matsubara okoshi

A Karatsu confection coated with brown sugar and scented with ginger. I’d like to remember its pine-inspired shape along with the view.

Highlights

A view over Niji no Matsubara

Beyond the town stretches a long band of pines, with Karatsu Bay farther out. From above, you can make out the grove in a way you can’t from the coast.

A Karatsu sweet inspired by the pines

Matsubara okoshi is a Karatsu specialty shaped like Japanese black pines. I enjoyed its brown sugar and ginger aroma while taking in the view.
