Ashizuri Cape Holding my scarf in place, I couldn't look away from the lighthouse and waves

On a winter trip to Ashizuri Cape, I looked out at the white lighthouse from Tengu no Hana. I'd meant to take a photo, but I couldn't stop looking from the lighthouse to the sea. I lowered my phone and found I didn't want to leave.

This winter trip left me wanting to stay a little longer and watch the sea and lighthouse. I kept one hand on my scarf while I waited for the next wave.

A chest-up view of the narrator looking out at the lighthouse and sea from Tengu no Hana at Ashizuri Cape in winter. She wears a white coat and holds a lavender scarf in one hand, with a black phone lowered in the other. A small white lighthouse stands on the cape in the distance to the right; the sea and reefs are in the center, with a cliff to the right.

WinterFebruary, during the day

I came to see the lighthouse, then stayed for the next wave

I walked out to Tengu no Hana at Ashizuri Cape on a winter afternoon. From here, you can see Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse. I spotted it at the tip of the tree-covered cape and felt a little relief: I'd made it. Then the sea stretching out beside it caught my eye too. Somehow, there was even more I wanted to see than before I came.

I held the scarf at my chest with one hand and lowered the phone I'd been holding in the other. Each gust from the sea swept my hair across my cheek. I watched with my shoulders slightly hunched as waves hit the rocks, white spray bursting and vanishing. The sea never stayed still for a second.

I meant to use the lighthouse as a landmark and watch the sea, but my eyes kept drifting back to the waves. I watched a big wave come in over one rock, only to see another reach a different one. Where would the next one hit? I thought I was just taking in the view, but before I knew it, I was waiting for the next wave as if we'd arranged to meet.

I turned back to the lighthouse and laughed a little. I'd come thinking I'd take a photo, but I kept following the waves with my eyes. With the lighthouse and sea side by side, my attention kept going back and forth between them. I kept a hand on my scarf and told myself to stay just a little longer.

Even after I picked my phone back up, I didn't raise it to take a picture right away. Part of me wanted a photo to remember it by, but I also wanted to hold on to the feeling of the wind on my cheek and the time I spent waiting for the next wave. After I'd decided to leave, I looked back at the lighthouse one more time.

At last I pulled my scarf tight and left the cape. When I got back, I wanted to tell my friend about the lighthouse and how watching the waves had made it so hard to leave. After such a long journey, I hadn't expected the simple act of taking in the view to mean so much. I want to see that winter sea with my own eyes again.

Local Specialties

Tosashimizu Sōdabushi

Sōdabushi is made from Sōda bonito, known locally as mejika, caught in Tosashimizu City. Its bold flavor and aroma make for a richly savory stock, used in udon and soba. After looking out at the winter sea, I wanted to enjoy a taste of the region over a warm meal.

Highlights

The Lighthouse from Tengu no Hana

Tosashimizu City lists Tengu no Hana as a place to view Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse. If you're hoping to see the sea and lighthouse together, this is a lovely view. Seeing the white lighthouse brought home just how far I'd travelled.

A White Lighthouse First Lit in 1914

Ashizuri Cape Lighthouse stands 18 m tall and was first lit in 1914. It's described as a symbol of Shikoku's southernmost cape. I used the lighthouse as my marker while looking out to sea, but the next wave kept catching my eye. I could hardly look away.

A February Trip for the Camellias

The camellias at Ashizuri Cape are another seasonal highlight in mid to late February. After taking in the winter sea and lighthouse, I wanted to plan another trip for the flowers. I was already thinking about where I might stop for a break on my next trip, and caught myself planning the next trip before this one had even ended.
