Sado Island, Niigata

Exploring the Osado Skyline Follow an autumn road to Hakuundai for sweeping island views

The Osado Skyline is a scenic road of about 30 km linking Kanai and Aikawa. In late October, I drove my red car along slopes covered in autumn leaves. When I got out at Hakuundai and looked across the island, Sado felt bigger than it had from the sea—the mountains had opened up a whole new side of the island.

On a clear morning in late October, I drove the autumn-coloured mountain road on Sado, Niigata, up to Hakuundai. Stepping out to take in the whole island, I felt just how much more there was to Sado than the sea I’d seen at the port.

I’m driving along the autumn-coloured Osado Skyline in my red open-top car, wearing a green jacket over a turtleneck. I have both hands on the wheel and am looking ahead.

Where the autumn curves open up to the whole island

On a clear morning in late October, I headed for the Osado Skyline in a turtleneck under my green jacket. I lowered the roof of my red car, and the mountain air brushed my cheeks. When I first arrived at the port, the sea had been my strongest impression of Sado. Today, I wanted to explore the mountain roads, too.

The road bends gently near Hakuundai, with autumn-coloured trees lining the slope ahead. I kept both hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road as it curved out of sight. Sunlight slipped through the leaves and scattered across the tarmac. Even inside the car, it felt as though I were travelling deeper into the mountains.

When I reached the car park at Hakuundai and parked, I finally loosened my grip. I pulled my jacket closed and walked to the viewing deck. A moment ago, I’d been following the road just ahead of me; now I could see all the way across to the distant plain. The change felt so good that I paused at the railing and took a deep breath.

Looking out across the Kuninaka Plain, I could see how the island’s mountains and bays fit together. Having driven the mountain road made the plain below feel even wider. From here, I could take my time looking at the shape of the island—something I might have missed if I’d only travelled from the port to my next stop.

Before heading back to the car, I thought of the autumn road I’d driven to get here. Next, I’d love to try Sado’s Okesa persimmons. After taking in the mountain autumn, choosing fruit grown right here sounds like such a treat. I checked the road to Aikawa on the map and decided to leave myself a little more time to explore the island.

Local specialities to try

Sado’s Okesa Persimmons

Okesa persimmons, including the Hiratanenashi and Tone Wase varieties, are one of Sado’s signature local products. Hearing that they’re sweet and juicy makes me want to pick some up as a snack after seeing the autumn leaves. I’d love to enjoy the island’s autumn through both its scenery and its flavours.

Highlights

A mountain road linking Kanai and Aikawa

The road is about 30 km long, and its highest point is over 900 m above sea level. Adding a mountain drive to a trip around the island’s coast lets me appreciate Sado’s size from a different angle, and that makes me happy.

Hakuundai, at about 850 m

Hakuundai is a community centre with a mountain lodge feel. From the viewing deck, you can see Ryotsu Bay, the Kuninaka Plain and the Ogi Peninsula. I’d like to look out towards the far side of the island while thinking back to the mountains I’ve just driven through.

This scenic road runs from Kanai to Aikawa and climbs high into the mountains. I stopped at Hakuundai along the way and took in the island from the viewing deck.

I paired a drive through the autumn colours with time to get out and explore Hakuundai. A break in the mountains makes a lovely pause between Kanai and Aikawa.
