Tenkaiho Observatory Look out over Kujukushima and take a bite of a Sasebo Burger
At Tenkaiho, I always want to follow the sea between the Kujukushima islands and see where it goes. One mid-October afternoon, I brought a burger I’d picked up in Sasebo to the observatory. I took my time with a burger I love and that wide-open sea view.
Come along for the view I found at Tenkaiho on a mid-October afternoon.
AutumnMid-October afternoon
Look out over Kujukushima and take a bite of a Sasebo Burger
Standing by the observatory railing, I could see islands stretching from close at hand into the distance. The sea wound between the rounded green islands, with still more beyond them. My friend and I were trying to pick out the most distant islands we could see.
I lifted the Sasebo Burger I’d brought with both hands. Lettuce, tomato, and egg peeked out between the buns. I took a big bite. The bun and fillings tasted so good together that I immediately wanted another bite, even though I’d meant to take in the view first.
I felt the sea breeze on my shirt sleeves, lowered the burger for a moment, and looked back at the islands. Going back and forth between eating and taking in the view is part of the fun here.
Sasebo Burgers are a local specialty, handmade to order, and each shop has its own size and flavor. I picked mine up in town today. Hearing about the burger my friend chose made me want to try a different one on my next trip to Sasebo.
Tenkaiho sits 165m above sea level and offers a 180-degree panorama of Kujukushima. From mid- to late October, cosmos flowers bloom in the garden below the observatory, too. We talked about finishing our burgers, taking in the sea, then walking through the flower garden.
After I tidied away the wrapper, I looked over the water between the islands once more. Before, I’d been following the green shapes of the islands; now I was curious about how the sea threaded between them. You can enjoy the view of Kujukushima in different ways, depending on where you stand and what you choose to look at.
