A summer evening beneath Kushimoto Bridge’s white arch More to see on the way back from Oshima to Kushimoto

The white arch of Kushimoto Bridge comes into view as I drive back from Oshima one summer evening. I want to make even the short stretch beneath its repeating crossbeams part of the day’s adventure. The usukawa manju I picked up in Kushimoto can wait until the drive is over.

On a July drive from Kii Oshima back to mainland Kushimoto, pass beneath the white arch before sunset, then take a break to enjoy one of the town’s local sweets.

Kushimoto Bridge’s white arch and crossbeams rise behind a woman in a red open-top car on a summer evening. She looks ahead with both hands on the wheel; beyond her are the sea and green shoreline, and the passenger seat is empty.

SummerA July evening, before sunset

I’ll remember the arch on the way back, too

One July evening, after exploring Oshima with my friend, we headed for Kushimoto Bridge. There was still light in the sky as the road led us from the island back to the mainland. Knowing I’d get to pass beneath that white arch again on the way back felt like a little bonus.

I had on a blue checked top, white shorts, and sandals. I’d settled my sunglasses on my head before setting off; while driving, I kept both hands on the wheel. Looking ahead, I could see the white crossbeams layered one after another.

As I drove beneath the arch, one crossbeam after another passed overhead. I loved the feeling of moving through that huge frame, with my eyes on the road ahead.

Kushimoto Bridge opened in 1999, linking mainland Kushimoto with Oshima. Its arch rises in a gentle parabolic curve that echoes the outline of the island. I love that the road I took to explore the island gives me something to look forward to on the way back, too.

The arched section of the bridge is 290m long. Once I’d crossed, the white framework overhead receded into the distance. Part of me wanted to go through once more, but maybe I’ll save that for another season and another visit to Oshima. It was only a short stretch, but I know I’ll remember it as its own little scene.

Once we’d parked for a break, my friend and I shared the usukawa manju I’d bought from Gihei in Kushimoto before setting off. Its thin skin let the bean paste peek through, and its gentle sweetness slowly spread through my mouth. After driving beneath the white arch, we savored one more taste of Kushimoto and talked about the day for a few extra minutes. It made the trip feel a little longer.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Local specialties to try on your trip

Gihei’s Usukawa Manju

Inspired by the rock formations at Hashigui-iwa, a scenic spot in Kushimoto, this local sweet has a thin skin with bean paste peeking through. It’s gently sweet, and I’d love to pick some up for a break after the drive or bring a few home as a souvenir.

Highlights

A white arch that echoes the island’s silhouette

The arch’s gentle curve was designed with its natural surroundings in mind. I got to pass beneath it again on the way back from exploring Oshima, which felt like a little bonus. By the time I’d crossed, I wanted to go through once more.

The road between Oshima and mainland Kushimoto

The bridge opened on September 8, 1999. I love that the drive back from exploring the island lets you enjoy more of the sea and the bridge, too.
