Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga
Korogi Bridge Autumn leaves beyond the railing, a spa-town manju in my hand
In Yamanaka Onsen in autumn, I’d like to make time to walk across Korogi Bridge. Autumn leaves overlap beyond the wooden railing, with Kakusenkei’s stream below. With a manju chosen in the spa town, let’s make it a detour for both the scenery and a sweet break.
This time it’s an autumn day, surrounded by trees in their seasonal colours. A moment of stopping at Korogi Bridge to taste a manju from the spa town.
AutumnA bright day during the autumn-colour season
Before the first bite, I want to look at the bridge a little longer
Walking from the spa town, I began to see the wooden bridge. Its railing curved gently towards the buildings beyond. The feeling of wood as I stepped onto it was a little delight, so different from the road I’d driven here on.
Beside the bridge, I took out the spa-town manju I’d wrapped in paper. I’d been wondering where to eat it, but here, with the wooden railing and autumn leaves before me, I wanted to enjoy that first bite.
But the colourful leaves in front of me caught my attention too. I lifted the wrapped manju a little and found myself looking at it along with the scenery. Spending time looking at the bridge with something sweet in my hand made me happier than I’d expected.
Noticing the river’s sound, I went closer to the railing after finishing. From the bridge, I could see trees surrounding the river. I’d been filling my photos with leaves, but now I wanted to capture the flowing water too.
My driving friend would probably say I’d spent a long time out of the car today. Learning about the path from Korogi Bridge to Kurotani Bridge made me want to walk that way too. If I invite her, perhaps I’ll tell her to come in walking shoes.
I wanted to choose my next stop along the river. I’d meant only to go back to the car park, but Yamanaka Onsen in autumn kept giving me more reasons to walk. I put away the manju wrapper and headed a little farther beyond the bridge.

What I’d like to taste here
Nyānyā manju
The manju from Yamanaka Ishikawaya have a subtle aroma of brown sugar and locally made miso. I’d choose one as a treat along the walk, taking time to savour even the smooth bean paste inside.
Places I’d like to stop
A bridge built entirely from hinoki cypress
Korogi Bridge across Kakusenkei Gorge is made entirely of hinoki cypress. I’d like to make a detour on foot and look closely at the wooden railing and bridge deck.
A bridge replaced in 2019
The current bridge was unveiled on 12 October 2019. The feel of wood beneath my feet was a little delight, different from the road I’d driven here on.
A walking path continuing from the bridge
Kakusenkei walking path
- Path length
- About 1.3 km
- The two ends of the path
- Korogi Bridge to Kurotani Bridge
Walk beside the stream, looking at the trees and bridges.
About 1.3 km is the length of the path continuing to Kurotani Bridge, not the length of Korogi Bridge itself. I’d like to make time to look at the bridge, then walk beside the river.
