Sasaguri, Komenoyama

Komenoyama Observatory (Sasaguri) The city lights leave us speaking in whispers

After climbing the mountain and parking, I found the city lights stretching beyond the dark ridgeline. I slipped on my cardigan against the April night air and stayed there, taking it all in. At Komenoyama, even the pause feels like a reason to make the trip.

Read about my April night at Komenoyama Observatory in Sasaguri and the view I found there.

At Komenoyama Observatory on a spring night, a woman in a cardigan sits at the front of a parked red convertible, looking past a pavilion toward the city lights.

SpringA spring night in April

The city lights leave us speaking in whispers

In the gravel clearing, I switched off the engine and carefully sat down on the front of my car. I could feel the gravel under my toes, and I tugged my cardigan sleeves a little closer around my shoulders. A low pavilion stood in front of me, with Fukuoka’s city lights beyond it. Once the sound of the climb faded, time seemed to slow as I took in the view.

Komenoyama is a 594 m mountain in Sasaguri. They say you can see Hakata Bay and Tenjin below from the observatory. The sea was dark that night, so it was easy to see where it ended and the city lights began. I wanted to take in the sweep of light instead of picking out one building. It feels so different from seeing the city at night from down below.

My friend stood a little way off and said, “The lights go on and on into the distance.” I nodded and rested my hands together on my knees. That’s what I like about places like this: we can look at the same view without needing to fill the silence. Whenever the spring breeze lifted my hair, I could feel how soft the cardigan was on my shoulders.

I’ve heard the view just after sunset is lovely too, when the last glow in the sky mingles with the city lights. I took my time with the night view today, but next time I’d like to arrive before dusk and watch it happen: the sky growing darker as more city lights come on. I’d love to see that change from this clearing.

For a Sasaguri souvenir, I’d look for the handmade manju at Daishi Manju Shop. The amazake and brown sugar varieties are among the town’s local specialties. I could stop at the foot of the mountain for something sweet before heading up, then take in the view here after dark. I’ll plan a day like that with my friend.

Even after I stood up to head back to the car, I turned around one more time. The same city lights still stretched on beyond the car. Even without anything big happening, days like this—when I can take my time with the night view—are the ones I want to remember. For the drive home, I’d pick a song that carried the feeling of the evening.

Highlights

Hakata Bay and Fukuoka at night

Beyond the mountain’s dark ridgeline, city lights stretch into the distance. My friend and I found ourselves speaking more quietly, content to look at the same lights without saying much.

From sunset into night

The moment when the sunset glow mingles with the city lights is part of the charm here, too. I’d love to come in the evening and watch the sky change all the way into night.
