Driving to Higashi-Daisen Bridge Autumn fills the valley beyond the railing

If I'm driving around Daisen in autumn, I want to make time to stop at Higashi-Daisen Bridge and take in the full depth of the valley. Trees stretch in layers from just below the railing to the distant ridgelines, and the scale of the mountain really hits you.

Take in an autumn morning view, with autumn foliage layered against the cedars.

A woman in a dusty-pink cardigan rests one hand on the metal railing of Higashi-Daisen Bridge. A valley of autumn foliage, cedar forest, and distant mountain ridges stretches out before her.

AutumnAn autumn morning among the foliage

The valley's depth, seen from the bridge

When I reached Higashi-Daisen Bridge and turned toward the valley, the trees stretched far below, much farther than I'd expected. I tugged at the sleeve of my dusty-pink cardigan and gently rested a hand on the railing. After the mountain drive, the cool metal felt lovely against my skin. My gaze had been fixed on the branches right in front of me; now it was traveling deep into the valley.

Nearby, I could make out the shape of each leaf; across the valley, the trees blended into broad swaths on the far slope. The cedars' deep green made the autumn colors of the broadleaf trees stand out. I lifted my phone to take a picture, but the screen couldn't do justice to the valley's depth. I lowered it and let my eyes wander all the way to the far slope.

The bridge sits on the Daisen Loop Road between Sekigane and Kagamiganaru. It's 170 m long and 45 m high. Once I knew those measurements, I looked down again and was amazed that the bridge I'd crossed so casually spanned such a vast valley. It's lovely to admire a bridge from afar, but here I want to stand on it and soak in the forest below.

As clouds drifted by, the bright patches on the slopes shifted. Branches that had just been in the sun took on softer tones, while trees farther off brightened. Standing in the same place, I found my eye drawn to a different part of the view each time. If anyone asks me which color was prettiest when I get home, I think I'll tell them about the valley's depth instead.

After taking in the mountain scenery a little longer, I'd make my way toward Kurayoshi. I'm curious about Utsubuki Park dango, a local specialty. Even choosing a sweet to take home makes the autumn drive that much more exciting. Before getting back in the car, I took one more look at the valley and thought I'd like to stop here again next time.

The story sections are fiction inspired by this location. For accurate information, please consult official tourism and information websites.

Local treats to enjoy on your trip

Utsubuki Park dango

I want to pick up this Kurayoshi specialty after a mountain drive. It'd make a lovely treat to take home.

Highlights

Autumn foliage filling the valley

Trees overlap across the whole valley, from the branches in the foreground to the far slope. The valley's depth didn't come through in my photo, so I lowered my phone and took in the view with my own eyes.

A pause on the Daisen Loop Road

The bridge stands between Sekigane and Kagamiganaru. I want to take my time looking out over the mountain scenery here.
