Arakurayama Sengen Park I caught my breath, looked up—and there was Mount Fuji

A spring climb to a view of cherry blossoms, a five-story pagoda, and Mount Fuji. Read about the day I paused to catch my breath, then wanted to look up again and again.

A spring visit to see the cherry blossoms at Arakurayama Sengen Park. When I reached the observation deck, the view caught my attention before I’d even caught my breath.

In spring, at the observation deck in Arakurayama Sengen Park, a woman looks up with both hands on her knees; cherry blossoms, the five-story Chureito Pagoda, and snow-capped Mount Fuji are in view

Hands on my knees, then looking up again

I started up the steps from the grounds of Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine toward the observation deck. I’d heard there were 398 steps and pictured the view waiting at the top. I wanted to see both the cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji, so first things first: I had to climb.

Whenever the cherry blossoms caught my eye on the climb, I wanted to look up. My gaze went to the steps ahead, to the flowers nearby, and then back up the stairs. Even before I reached the observation deck, I kept finding more things I wanted to stop and take in.

At the top, I stopped with both hands on my knees and caught my breath. I’d planned to take a photo as soon as I arrived, but first I needed a moment to get my breathing under control. Then I lifted my head a little and saw Mount Fuji, and suddenly resting didn’t feel like an option.

Beyond the cherry blossoms stood the five-story Chureito Pagoda, with Mount Fuji rising behind it. I’d seen this view in photos, but seeing it after making the climb myself made me gasp. If my driving friend had seen me staring with my hands still on my knees, she’d have laughed.

Once I’d caught my breath, I straightened up and took another look. After looking at the flowers nearby and then Mount Fuji, I noticed the town spread out between them. I’d been focused on the blossoms, pagoda, and mountain, but now there was even more I wanted to see from here.

Even after I’d finished taking photos and put my phone away, I couldn’t bring myself to set off right away. I wanted to remember the climb along with the view, so I stayed a little longer to look at the cherry blossoms. When I show my friend the photos, I want to tell her how I meant to catch my breath but got completely absorbed in the scenery.

Local specialty

Yoshida udon from Fujiyoshida

Yoshida udon, a local dish from Fujiyoshida, is known for its firm, chewy noodles. It sounds like a tempting stop in town after exploring the park. After climbing all those steps, I found myself looking forward to savoring every chewy bite.

Highlights

The observation deck, 398 steps up

From the grounds of Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, 398 steps lead up to the observation deck. I made it to the top and put my hands on my knees, but the moment I looked up, the view had already stolen my attention.

Cherry blossoms, Chureito Pagoda, and Mount Fuji

In spring, you can see the cherry blossoms, the five-story Chureito Pagoda, and Mount Fuji all at once. I looked at the flowers nearby, turned to Mount Fuji, then found myself looking back at the flowers. I couldn’t decide where to look first; I was so happy.

Take in the view from the observation deck

The observation deck reopened after renovations on February 1, 2022. From here, I looked beyond the cherry blossoms and pagoda to the town stretching out before Mount Fuji. Every time I looked up, I found another thing I wanted to see.

The Fujiyoshida Tourism Guide explains how to get to the park from Kawaguchiko IC. After parking, the stairs from the shrine lead up to the observation deck. I caught my breath when I arrived, then kept looking up at the cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji.

If you’re coming by train, it’s about a 25-minute walk from Shimoyoshida Station to Chureito Pagoda. The Fujiyoshida Tourism Guide below has directions by car and train. Even on the way back, I kept thinking about the view after that climb.
