Off to Kankakei Gorge in Autumn I parked at the summit, then took a bite beneath the autumn leaves

I rode my blue-and-white motorbike to Kankakei Gorge in autumn. I parked in the car park at the summit station and switched off the engine; that’s when I noticed the leaves rustling in the trees. I set my helmet on the seat and pulled my black jacket back over my shoulders. I came for the autumn leaves, but even a quiet moment to catch my breath made the trip worthwhile.

The broadleaf trees in front of me were taking on autumn colour, while the pines beside them were still their familiar green. Each kind of tree changes in its own way. As I stood comparing them, I began to notice individual leaves more than I had when I first arrived. My body began to relax after the ride, and I took a slow breath of mountain air.

The Olive Beef croquette burger in my hands had such a thick bun that I was already wondering how wide I’d have to open my mouth. I’d heard the burger had an Olive Beef croquette and vegetables inside. I lifted it with both hands, still wrapped in paper. The toasty, savoury smell reached me, and I couldn’t wait any longer to take a bite.

The first bite brought together the croquette’s crisp coating, the bun and the vegetables. I opened my mouth a little too wide and nearly laughed at myself as I chewed. I told myself to take my time with the next one, but I took just as big a bite again. I never expected lunch on a mountaintop to be this much fun.

Kankakei Gorge’s unusual rock formations and towering cliffs have taken shape over countless years of wind and rain. I’ve heard the ropeway carries you right through the cliffs. From the car park where I am now, I can see the trees and station building, but once I’ve finished eating, I want to go and see the gorge, too. Today, I found myself wanting plenty of time to stop and enjoy myself, as well as time to ride.

Even after I finished my burger, I wasn’t ready to reach for my helmet just yet. I took another look at the autumn leaves beside my bike and thought about that first bite. I came for the mountain views, but the burger’s toasty smell will stay with me, too. Next time I come to Shodoshima in autumn, I want to enjoy another break at the summit.
