A drive to Seiun Bridge A detour on Route 218 to see the great structure beneath the road
What I came to like was seeing from the side the road I normally travel along by car. Looking at the shape of the bridge across the valley makes me look forward to the rest of the drive too.
This is the story of the day I looked at the bridge from the roadside station’s viewing deck. Take in the shape of the arch below the road too.
AutumnAn afternoon in late October
Seeing the road I drive from the side
One afternoon in late October, my driving friend and I stopped at Seiun Bridge roadside station. After our drive on Route 218, we got out and headed first to the viewing deck. I wanted to slow down somewhere I could see the structure underneath the bridge too.
As I came beside the white railing, I saw the road stretching across the valley. Beneath it was a great steel arch, lined with smaller structural members. It became fascinating to see from the side the road I travelled on by car.
Resting one hand lightly on the railing, I looked towards the bridge. Following the road from near to far made me curious about the scenery waiting after a drive to the other side.
Seiun Bridge is 410 m long, with 137 m from the water’s surface to the bridge deck. “When you look at the arch underneath as well, it’s huge,” I said to my friend, then looked back at the valley and bridge. Even when I know the figures, I like spending time seeing the shape in front of me.
To continue the break, I’d like to enjoy the roadside station’s chicken nanban set meal too. When you make time for a meal after seeing the bridge, one detour becomes an unhurried little journey. I walked back along the viewing deck, talking with my friend about the next road to take.

Beneath the road is a large truss arch. Looking at how its members lined up made me want to remember the shape of the bridge.
