Ganmon From pine-covered rocks to the sea: a summer detour for a closer look at the cave
At Ganmon in summer, I’d like to leave the car and head to the seaside steps. From close up, the sea outside and the water beyond the hole in the rock become part of one view. A place where I want to stop and compare the pine-covered rocks with the water.
This scene takes place during a summer day. In a white T-shirt dress, I’m looking at the cave from a landing on the steps.
SummerA clear summer day
I came to see the sea’s colour, then grew curious about the rock’s shape
I’d meant only to look at the sea from above, but seeing steps made me want to get closer. Going down one step at a time in white trainers, I watched the rocks gradually approach eye level. The sea felt closer than it had from inside the car.
Stopping on the landing, I could clearly see the hole through the rock. Only the far end of the darkness was bright, with sea beyond. A moment ago I’d been looking at a broad stretch of water; now I kept watching a little opening.
The nearer water was clear right up to the rock’s edge. Its brightness changed with each wave, making me wait a moment before pressing the shutter. Should I fill the frame with the opening or include the pines above it? I wanted to keep both.
The closer I looked, the more remarkable it seemed that the sea had eroded this shape. A passage for water remained through the huge rock. My driving friend would probably laugh if she saw me taking so many photos from the same angle here.
Perhaps I’d include a little of the steps in the photo I showed her, to convey that I’d walked closer myself. My memory of the view came with the feeling of the steps beneath my feet on the way down.
Once back, I’d like to choose a meal around Togi. Seeing a feature about sweet shrimp fritter burgers gave me another reason to continue along the coast. For now, with my hands still free, I took one more look through the rock opening.

What I’d like to taste here
Sweet shrimp fritter burger
The prefecture’s feature on driving Noto’s west coast introduces this as a speciality of Togi Umikaido roadside station. After seeing Ganmon, I’d choose a meal to enjoy the fragrant fried shrimp.
Places I’d like to stop
A rock opening carved by waves
Ganmon opens through bedrock jutting into the sea. Only the far end of the dark hole was bright, and I couldn’t look away from the water beyond.
Pine-covered rocks and Noto Kongo
Pines grow above Ganmon. Along the Noto Kongo coast from Fukuura Port to Sekinohana, I’d like to enjoy the scenery shaped by rock and sea.
Dimensions of the seaside rock opening
Ganmon sea cave
- Cave depth and width
- 60 m deep; 6 m wide
- Cave height
- 15 m high
An opening passing through rock that juts into the sea, carved out by the waves.
Knowing the dimensions makes me curious about the depth of the hole in the rock too. This time, I’d like to leave the car and approach the sea by the steps on the landward side.
